My Pit Bull did better than your Retriever

Ok, I will start this by saying I have nothing against any breed with the word Retriever in the name (or any breed at all). We started Mesa in Dock Diving. We do SplashDogs (click the link to learn more) and decided to try distance. In short, you throw a toy and the dog jumps off a dock with a two foot drop into a pool. They measure where the base of the tail hits the water.

Anyways, a couple weeks back we drove to Bass Pro Shops so Mesa could try it out. She loved it. But, there was a guy there who was so rude to me and made comments about "real dock diving dogs." He cut in front of me in line "so his real dog could go" and if he ended up behind me he didn't let me get my two runs in since he got on the dock as soon as I released the toy the first time. The others there (both fellow owners, and officials) told him to stop but it was a lost cause.

Anyways, Mesa did so well in practice that we entered a wave (a round). Mr. Bad Guy was in the wave before us and was bragging how his first timer jumped over 5 feet which is really good for a first time. In our round Mesa went and guess what? She jumped 6'10" HA! Take that! And every dog that placed lower than her (and there were more than 10) had retriever in their name.

I really wanted to rub it in his face but alas we went on our merry way, picked up a treat in the store and then started the long drive home.

Here are some pics of Mesa at practice a few weeks later.

First she forgot what she was supposed to do:

Then she remembered:

She did much better when I threw the toy far enough. When I didn't she would change direction mid air:

  4. Somehow I knew Mesa would do amazing in this type of competition; she looks just like a Puma in those pictures. I think people don't realize that pitties are multi-talented.

  7. Heehee! Even though we've (sort of) got 'retriever' in our names, you could seriously out-jump us into a pool, no question! Awesome pictures? And as for the guy with a 'real' dog, erm, what did he think you were? A cat in disguise? *sheesh*

  15. Yay, Mesa! Way to show 'em! You just haves to let your actions do the talking and leave 'em in the dust...er...wake. I am very very much proud of you and I know your mom is, too!

(I don't go in the water cuz of the danger of my brindle furs washing away and all.)

  17. That looks really fun! Mesa has such determined focus on her face. How exciting that Mesa did so well--and kudos to you, Kari, for not punching that guy in the mouth--or any other part of his loathsome anatomy.

  18. Hey, good to see you back! I had no idea Mesa had such big springs. Competition time! How much fun would it be to show them all up and bag a trophy? :)

  19. Yup, just let your accomplishments speak for themselves. Any one who would say a comment as rude as that is not deserving of your time!

GO MESA! Just more proof that the Pit Bull is probably the most versatile breed out there..

  27. Mesa! Those retriever dogs are a crock. My idiot brother won't even dive at all, but slithers in like some big old snake. You are a true champion diver. I love your action photos.

  31. HOW AWESOME!!! We went to Bakersfield when the Splashdogs were there and watched them. Gimli and I got to go and it was a lot of fun. We didn't have the money to be able to try it out ourselves, but it was fun watching all those other dogs!

Mesa, You are a GREAT diver! So glad that you showed up that rude person! Pippin

P.S. I've got a Pippin Puzzle up that is open until Wednesday at Midnight Pacific Time if you'd be interested...
